The request follows the discovery of manipulated streaming activity that affected a prediction market tied to Spotify\u2019s monthly U.S. music charts.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify reportedly detected and removed more than 500,000 artificial streams that pushed Malcolm Todd\u2019s song Earrings into the platform\u2019s most-streamed tracks in the United States for the month. Kalshi had already settled a market based on which song would finish as Spotify\u2019s most-streamed U.S. track during that period, making the manipulated streams directly relevant to the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regulatory scrutiny has intensified around prediction markets<\/h2>\n<p>At the same time, prediction market operators are facing increasing attention from U.S. regulators. As crypto.news <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto.news\/cftc-investigates-polymarket-over-business-and-social-media-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> earlier, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has opened an investigation into Polymarket that extends across several parts of its business, including its social media operations.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation follows a Wall Street Journal report <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto.news\/wall-street-journal-report-claims-polymarket-used-fake-wagers-in-creator-promotions\/\" target=\"_blank\">alleging<\/a> that Polymarket hired dozens of mostly college-aged content creators to publish staged trading videos intended to attract new users. Bloomberg subsequently reported that the CFTC\u2019s inquiry is not limited to those marketing practices and covers additional aspects of the platform\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, state regulators have continued challenging prediction market platforms, arguing that some contracts function as unlicensed sports betting products. Meanwhile, the CFTC has filed lawsuits <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto.news\/cftc-fires-back-after-kentucky-targets-polymarket-kalshi\/\" target=\"_blank\">against several states<\/a> while asserting that it has exclusive authority to regulate federally supervised prediction markets.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator is also <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto.news\/sec-and-cftc-launch-crypto-rules-review-after-futures-approval\/\" target=\"_blank\">seeking public feedback<\/a> on proposed rules for prediction markets that address concerns over insider trading and market manipulation. According to the CFTC, comments on the proposal will be accepted through July 31.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kalshi settlement has drawn criticism from a top trader<\/h2>\n<p>Criticism of Kalshi\u2019s handling of the Spotify market has also come from within its own trading community. Caleb Davies, a trader who estimates he has earned more than $1 million on the platform, accused Kalshi of settling the market despite repeated warnings that Malcolm Todd\u2019s sudden rise in Spotify rankings warranted further investigation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kalshi did pay out the market based on fraudulent results right after sending me an email stating that there are many plausible reasons that Malcolm Todd&#8217;s timely surge was not due to artificial boosting. He questioned whether the platform prioritized collecting trading fees over addressing potential market manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify\u2019s request also extends to Polymarket because it lists similar prediction markets based on Spotify streaming performance.
