Node operators were required to update both their execution and consensus clients before the fork.

Ethereum developers are expected to use the results from Sepolia before setting the activation date for Hoodi, the network’s next testnet stage. A final mainnet date has not been confirmed.

Ethereum Glamsterdam tests 200 million gas limit

One of the main changes being tested on Sepolia is a 200 million gas limit, more than three times the roughly 60 million level used before the upgrade.

As crypto.news previously reported, Ethereum prepared the 200 million gas test to see whether validators and clients can reliably process much larger blocks under public network conditions.

The higher limit gives Ethereum more room for transactions within each block, but it does not automatically guarantee lower fees. Validators still need to process, execute and verify the extra workload without creating unacceptable hardware or network demands.

Developers had already tested the higher capacity before Sepolia. Glamsterdam Devnet 11 completed its transition while raising the gas limit from 60 million to 200 million, using roughly 84,000 validators across several Ethereum clients.

Testing on Sepolia now brings the configuration into a public environment where developers can monitor client performance and behavior under conditions that are harder to control than a private development network.

The Ethereum Foundation previously established 200 million gas as the floor targeted for Glamsterdam testing. Further increases remain part of Ethereum’s longer term scaling work, though any gas limit eventually used on mainnet will depend on how clients handle the additional load.

Glamsterdam changes how Ethereum blocks are built

Glamsterdam’s two headliner changes are enshrined proposer builder separation, known as ePBS, and block level access lists.

EIP 7732 brings the separation between block proposers and block builders directly into Ethereum’s consensus protocol. Under the design, the validator proposing a block does not need to perform the same role as the builder assembling its execution payload.

The proposal separates consensus validation from execution validation, giving validators additional time to check execution payloads. Ethereum currently processes transactions in a largely sequential order, limiting how much work can be handled at the same time.

Parallel execution is intended to let clients process more activity without relying solely on continued gas limit increases.

Public testing carries its own risks. Developers previously warned that builders could exploit Sepolia because test ether is inexpensive and easy to obtain. A malicious builder could repeatedly win block auctions and then withhold execution payloads, creating conditions that differ from mainnet where the same behavior would carry a real financial cost.

Developers kept adversarial testing on the longer running Platåberget environment while preparing Sepolia for the public fork.

Block access lists prepare Ethereum for parallel processing

EIP 7928 introduces block level access lists, or BALs, which record the accounts and storage locations accessed during a block along with relevant post transaction state changes.

Providing that information in advance allows Ethereum clients to identify which parts of state will be required during execution. Clients can then read data from disk in parallel, execute eligible transactions concurrently and calculate state roots more efficiently.

The approach is intended to move Ethereum away from processing all execution work through a single sequential path as developers work toward higher Layer 1 throughput.

Glamsterdam changes gas accounting at the same time. EIP 8037 introduces separate charges tied to state creation, changing assumptions that some applications and infrastructure have relied on for years.

Ethereum developers have warned that the changes could affect wallets and gas tools that use fixed gas assumptions. A basic ETH transfer to an existing account can continue to use 21,000 gas, while operations that create new state can cost more.

Hardcoded gas limits, fixed stipends and similar assumptions may therefore require changes as Glamsterdam moves closer to mainnet.

Hegotá will follow the Glamsterdam upgrade

Once Glamsterdam reaches mainnet, Ethereum development is set to move toward Hegotá, the next major network upgrade planned for 2027.

Developers have been narrowing Hegotá’s scope from dozens of proposals covering privacy, censorship resistance, account abstraction, gas pricing, validator economics and further Layer 1 scaling.

EIP 8141, known as Frame Transactions, has been scheduled for Hegotá. Frames would separate transaction authorization, execution and fee payment, allowing applications or other accounts to cover gas for users while validators continue receiving fees in ETH.

The design could support sponsored transactions, alternative signature systems, key rotation and payments where users interact with applications without separately holding ETH for gas.

Privacy remains another part of the work being considered for the 2027 upgrade. Ethereum researchers have examined transaction designs that could give privacy pools more control over fee payments, while Fork Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists are intended to make it harder for builders to exclude eligible transactions.

Developers began reviewing 66 Hegotá proposals in August before narrowing the package. The candidates covered account abstraction, transaction pricing, state growth, censorship resistance and network scaling, with individual proposals still subject to implementation work and testing before inclusion.

Glamsterdam must first complete its remaining testnet process. After Sepolia, developers are expected to determine the Hoodi activation schedule using results from the current deployment before setting a final date for the mainnet fork.

Source link

Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade has gone live on the Sepolia testnet, moving its 2026 scaling package into one of its final public testing stages before a planned mainnet activation.
